Today’s theme was Horsing Around. We learned all about the horses and got to meet Tollgate’s resident pony, Friday.
The campers learned about their pulse and how exercise impacts it. First, they measured their resting heart rate. Then, they used stick horses to race around their course and took their pulse after.
Campers learned about zoonotic disease and how to reduce the spread of disease at farms. They learned a helpful acronym: CHIP. C- cleanliness, H- history, I- isolation, P- proper management practices.
During the afternoon, we had a ferrier visit the farm. She showed us how to take care of the horses hooves and the tools she uses to trim and file their nails. Campers had some really great questions for her! What was your camper’s favorite thing they learned about horses?
After the ferrier was done, campers had an opportunity to pet Friday, Tollgate’s pony.
The campers have been working on nests all week. Today they had the opportunity to drop the nests with eggs in them. Most eggs managed to survive the drop, with many of the nests lasting for a few drops.
In garden kitchen, campers made their own parfaits. They used yogurt, blueberries, and a sprinkle of granola.
We managed to stay cool during the day by running through the sprinkler and enjoying popsicles at the end of the day before the Tollgate Olympics.
