July Horse Camp: Monday

Welcome to Horse Camp! This week will explore the wonders of the equine body! Campers will dive into the anatomy and physiology of horses, explore specimens under a microscope, learn about veterinary procedures, and much more! Campers will also work on basic horsemanship skills, acquire horse husbandry knowledge, and experience the day-to-day operations of a working farm!

In the morning, campers were split into different horse groups and worked with those groups throughout the day.

Each day campers will get an opportunity to ride the horses, beginning with basic skills such as walking, stopping and turning.

Horses are large creatures that eat a lot of food. This also means that they have a lot of waste! More than some campers cared to think about…On farms, we’re able to collect horse manure and mix it with our compost. This eventually breaks down and decomposes to become soil again, just like the sample that campers were able to touch and feel.

Horse Campers sifted through magazine photos in search of different horses. After cutting out their pictures, they sorted them based on breed and pasted them into individual journals.

This is just a quick glance at our day! Be sure to ask your camper about what they’re up to at Tollgate and check back throughout the week for more pictures!
