MSU Tollgate Farm: The Secret Life of Trees: Novi Kindergarten

Meet a Tree: Parts of a Tree and Tree ID

This week on the farm, we will explore the questions:

  • What makes something a tree?
  • What are the different parts of a tree?
  • How are some trees different from each other and from other plants?
  • What is the life cycle of a tree?

Check out our video to learn how to meet a tree! Make sure to follow along with the journal page here. If your student is PreK or K and you would prefer a journal with just drawing, you can find a different version here. After you finish the video, be sure to meet a tree and see if a family member, sibling, or parent can guess it!

If you want to meet more trees after you are done, you can create a book of trees about the trees in your neighborhood or area. Find instructions for this activity from PBS here.

What about the life cycle of trees? Check out the Arbor Day Foundations Life of a Tree.

For Next Week: If it will be difficult to go outdoors to collect leaves during our class time next week, be sure to find a few leaves from a neighborhood park or roadside and press them in a big book so you have them for class next week!
