Red Planet Survival Camp: Tuesday

Welcome back to Day 2 of Red Planet Survival Camp! Our first day focused on finding shelter and identifying survival skills. Today, our campers practiced finding food and water, while setting aside some time to improve their shelters. Take a look at the adventures they had!

Archery is a wonderful survival skill as it can be used to help secure food or protect against danger. Each camper was able to take their turn with a bow and arrow. A few naturals emerged in each group!

Leave No Trace forces us to reflect on the impact we each have on our planet and any planet we might visit. Campers took a look at artifacts that they found scattered and left behind from other people. They collected and observed the items and tried to guess what the people were like and how they might have used the items for survival.

Foraging Hike

Shelter building is in full swing! We saw some major improvements and adjustments. Mars doesn’t have any guide books about building shelters so the trial and error has been a wonderful way to learn.

During morning Garden Kitchen, campers were able to taste the jam they prepared yesterday! They paired it with SunButter (alternative to peanut butter made from sunflower seeds) to make SunButter and Jam Sandwiches. During their spare time, campers talked about all of the different adjectives we can use to describe the taste and textures of the foods we eat. The way we talk about our food can be positive or negative and we realized that it’s important to be respectful of our different preferences and how we share these with others.

One of the best parts about Garden Kitchen is getting to collect and use veggies that are growing in our very own Tollgate garden! There were some sugar peas and purple basil that were ready for picking and snacking. Although this wasn’t our intended afternoon snack, Miss Emma showed us that we can work with what we have and create something wonderful. This ended up being a new favorite (and highly requested) recipe!

Skillet Sugar Snap Peas

  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 1 pound sugar snap peas
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes

Directions: Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the peas, salt, and red pepper to the pan and saute for 2-3 minutes, or until the peas start to blacken. Season with additional salt, if needed, before serving.
