Oh man campers, it was a hot one today! It was great that so many of our activities could be moved to the shade.
Today our theme was Emergency Aid: Teamwork and helping others. We learned wilderness first aid, signaling, more Leave No Trace (LNT) principles and continued our STEM activity.
Our two LNT principles today were ‘Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces’ and ‘Pack It In, Pack It Out’. While the Yellow Peppers were discussing what qualified as litter in the wilderness, they found a nail and other metal litter. Clearly, that person didn’t follow one of the LNT principles. The campers practiced their skit ideas and began writing them.
We practiced casting to prepare for fishing this week. We will use our skills on Thursday to catch some fish in the pond.
After our casting practice we played a survival maze game. It was so much fun to see the groups work together to remember the pattern. Ask your camper about the maze game!
We completed another fun team building activity called the “Two Leg Plank Walk”.The campers used communication to move their feet together and walk as one using the plank.
For our wilderness first aid, we learned three techniques: splints, burrito wrap for hypothermia, and an evacuation station or ‘litter’ carrier for if someone needed to be carried out of the woods. The kids enjoyed getting to wrap each other up in the tarps and sleeping bags to carry their group members.
During our signaling activity, we learned a variety of ways to signal for if we were lost in the woods. We even learned in what situation to use them like yelling if you’re close to civilization or smoke signals if you are far away. We used a reflective blanket, flashlight, and whistles.
The campers got to try some MREs. The Purple Peppers had macaroni and cheese, au gratin potatoes and raisins.
Tomorrow our theme is Fire Away: Building Fire and Archery Skills. So I bet you can guess from the title what a few of our activities will be? Some of the groups will also be fishing tomorrow. Get a good night sleep because tomorrow is going to be another hot and fun-filled day of summer camp!
