Survival Week 1 Day 4

Hello campers and families!

Today was dry and we were able to do all of our activities outdoors!

The campers headed up to pick raspberries in the garden. They will be adding these to a garden kitchen snack tomorrow.

What connections can your camper make with the food you eat at home? Can they find the produce you eat at home in the garden at Tollgate?

The pepper groups love spending time in the animal barn and pasture!

A blue pepper parent stated “I have to mention to you that we attended the 4H Fair last week and my camper was so proud to see the calf and the goats from the Tollgate Farm there. She took pictures with them and told us all the stories about the animals. The experience she is having attending the camp is priceless.”

Check out our goats at the fair this week in Davisburg!

In garden kitchen, campers chopped up vegetables and made tasty snacks.

A teen volunteer led a game of hangman while they waited for the snack to cook.

Here are the delicious recipes from today:

Morning: Chickpea Medley

Chickpeas
Spinach
Onion
Garlic
Broccoli
Fresh lemon juice
Salt
Pepper
Sunflower seeds

Sautee veggies on a pan with oil. Add chickpeas, spinach, lemon juice, salt, and pepper and cook until spinach is wilted. Top with sunflower seeds for serving.

Afternoon: Cauliflower Wings

1 head of cauliflower
1 tbsp. tomato puree
4 tbsp. olive oil
2 tbsp. gluten-free soy sauce
1 tbsp. apple cider vinegar
1 tsp. smoked paprika
¼ tsp. chili powder
1 tsp. garlic powder
1 tbsp. pure maple syrup

Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Chop up cauliflower into wing-sized pieces and place on baking sheet. Whisk together the remaining ingredients into one cohesive paste. Using your hands, coat the mixture all over the cauliflower pieces. Bake for about 20 minutes.

Mr. Julian led his group building fires. They started with a rocky fire pit.

Then they discussed fire structures and types of fuel. What is 1 advantage to using a tee-pee structure for a fire?

What is 1 advantage to using a log cabin structure?

Fishing was on the schedule this afternoon! The campers practiced casting before going to the dock.

These campers are demonstrating cooperation. Did your camper receive a CARES (Cooperation, Attitude, Respect, Empathy, Safety) badge this week?

**Tie dye shirts were sent home in backpacks this afternoon. Please have your camper wear their camp shirt for the last day of camp tomorrow!**
