GSAC 2 and Horse Camp- Day 5

Campers enjoyed Friday at camp!

Meet the green peppers at green science camp! They loved feeding the animals in the barn!

Throughout the week, green science campers built sustainable farms. The campers presented their farms to their peers telling about their plants, animals, and habitats.

In the morning, the staff put together solar stills. What did the campers make in the solar still?

What does the solar still rely on to warm up treats inside? S’mores are a tasty treat!

Right after lunch, the campers enjoyed a wagon ride around the farm. They sang camp songs!

Did your camper learn a new song this week?

The water slide is always a favorite activity!
Both camps enjoyed garden kitchen today. Pumpkin pancakes were on the menu!

Enjoy the recipe:

Pumpkin Spice Pancakes

¾ cup non-dairy milk + 1 tbsp lemon juice or white vinegar
1/3 cup packed pumpkin puree
1 tbsp butter or melted coconut oil
½ tsp vanilla extract
3 tbsp brown sugar
1 tbsp maple syrup
1 tsp baking powder
½ tsp baking soda
Pinch of salt
1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
¼ tsp cinnamon
1 cup whole-wheat or gluten free flour

Preheat electric griddle to medium heat (or about 350 degrees Fahrenheit) or a large skillet on medium to medium-low heat on the stovetop. Combine ¾ cup non-dairy milk and lemon juice in a large bowl and let rest for 5 minutes to curdle. Then add coconut oil, maple syrup, pumpkin, brown sugar, and vanilla extract and whisk to combine. Combine and mix flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt and spices into a separate bowl and then add to the wet ingredients. If the batter appears too thin, add a bit more flour. If too thick, add a splash of non-dairy milk. Let batter rest for 5-10 minutes. Oil/spray your griddle and pour batter onto the griddle into about ¼ cup measurements. Flip when bubbles appear in the middle and the edges turn slightly dry. Cook 1-3 minutes more on the other side, then plate. Top with pure maple syrup, a dash more pumpkin pie spice, and any other ingredients you desire.

Green science and horse campers also enjoyed doing animal chores together.

The horse campers enjoyed feeding the calf in the pasture.

They fed the dairy steer some horse treats (oat balls from earlier in the week). He loved them as much as the horses.

They also loved spending time with the goats.

This camper enjoyed holding the rabbit. Why do rabbits have large floppy ears? The campers retrieved goat food from the lower barn with the wheelbarrow. Great cooperation!

Horse campers learned about horse tack. What are the parts of the saddle?

How do you cinch the saddle?

Staff tested the knowledge of campers with a horse jeopardy game.

Campers collected horse manure to conduct an experiment. Does the horse have parasitic worms? They looked for worm eggs in the fecal sample. How do horses ingest parasites?

Parasite eggs come in different shapes and sizes. Can your camper identify the parasite eggs on the slide?

The campers practiced trotting and other skills in the arena today. What was your camper’s favorite skill they practiced? At the end of the day, the horse campers played capture the flag as their closing ceremony.
