Time Travelers Camp: Friday

Welcome back to Day 5 of Time Travelers Camp. For our final day in the past, we tried to get a feel for what it was like to be a kid before there was technology or store bought toys. Our entertainment today included making yarn dolls, learning about games of the past and listening and dancing along to Folk Music. Take a look at our day below!

Friday was the final opportunity for some campers to try their hand at catching and picking up chickens. We took advantage of this time and tried to capture a few moments on camera!

We had a sweet treat during our morning Garden Kitchen session. Miss Emma introduced us to Dirt Cups with a surprise ingredient….avocado! The avocado added a nice creaminess.

 Dirt Cups

  • ⅔ cup light coconut milk
  • 4 ounces avocado flesh
  • ¼ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips, melted
  • ¼ cup maple syrup or honey
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch salt
  • 4 to 6 chocolate cookies, crushed
  • Strawberries, optional for garnish and serving

Directions: Place the coconut milk, avocado, chocolate chips, sweetener, cocoa powder, vanilla, and salt in your blender and puree until smooth. Divide the pudding between 3 to 4 cups and top each with the crushed cookies. For optimum taste and texture, place in the refrigerator to set for 1 hour or longer. If desired, top and serve with strawberries on the side for dipping.

One of our visitors today was Miss Tammy Lee. She taught us about Kid Games of the Past. Miss Tammy pointed out that many of the tablets and I-pads we use developed from much older inventions. In school houses, students used to record their answers and practice their handwriting on chalk boards. Chalk boards were kind of an older version tablets! Games weren’t always readily available at stores (…there were even times when stores didn’t exist!) so kids had to be resourceful and make up games using things they found. Dolls could be made from dried cornhusks. This meant they wouldn’t break as easily as porcelain dolls. Before the plastic pieces for checkers were made, buttons, seeds or pebbles might have been used instead.

Campers tried making dolls from yarn like kids might have done in the past.

Our second visitor was Mr. Art Durow and pals. They played Folk music during lunch and did a performance for each of the Pepper Groups under the pavilion. Campers clapped along and jumped up to dance!

We wrapped up shelters in the woods today! Pepper Groups added their final touches and took pictures before taking them down. Our shelters are temporary and this means that part of our building process is taking them down. We do our best to spread the branches apart so that the next people that come through will have the same opportunity to build and create that we did.

Thanks for joining us for Closing Ceremony and camp this week! Our campers really enjoy getting to share some of the things they learn with their families. This week, we had a few groups sing together and two create skits based on some of their camp activities and interactions with Tollgate wildlife.
