Animal Camp: Week 1, Day 3

Today’s theme was Slimy and Scaly because we played with worms and went fishing today!

Campers made a “Wormarium” to see the worm tracks. They put dirt in a large glass jar and then a smaller glass jar to fill the space so the worm trails could be seen more easily. The concept is very similar to an ant farm.

After we learned about the good worms, we talked about bad worms; like parasites. The kids used play dough to design their own parasite. What did your camper name their made up parasite?

After milking the goats, the campers make goat milk soap. The recipe is so easy that you can recreate it at home!

Goat milk soap

  • 1 cup of goat milk
  • 1 pound of crushed soap noodles
  • 1 oz fragrance oil

In a closed double boiler, heat crushed soap noodles and goat milk on low heat, stirring until the mixture reaches a consistency similar to mashed potatoes.
Scoop soap into molds, sprayed with vegetable oil, and allow to sit for 24 hours.
Allow the soap to cure for two weeks to improve use. (can be cured up to 6 weeks)
Store in an airtight container for a year.

Here are the kids milking the goats for the milk for their soap!

Today in garden kitchen they made a warm tortellini salad with zucchini, tomatoes, and pesto. The campers enjoyed getting to chop up tomatoes and zucchini into little pieces to add to their snack. For their destination snack, they enjoyed an apricot-pineapple trail mix that they made yesterday.
