Wildlife Animal Camp: Friday

Welcome to Day 5 of Wildlife Animal Camp! It was a hot one so we wrapped up the week with our STEAM Nest Drop, Planet Earth in the conference center, a Bat Presentation and the Waterslide on the Hill!

Our final STEAM Project was to engineer bird nests that would keep eggs safe during an egg drop. We knew we were successful if we were able to drop our nest from the top of a platform and the eggs did not break. A couple of trial runs helped the groups make some adjustments before trying again. A few cracked eggs didn’t dampen our spirits!

We only had one visit to Garden Kitchen today since we would have popsicles in the afternoon! During our morning visit, we made some tasty Beet Rainbow Smoothies. Smoothies are extremely versatile and can really be done anyway you like. Here’s what we did:

Beet Rainbow Smoothie

  • 1 ½ cups of Orange Juice
  • ½ cup of strawberries
  • ½ cup blueberries
  • ½ banana
  • 2 thin slices of beet

Directions: Combine all ingredients and blend until smooth.

In an attempt to keep cool and dry, we spent some time indoors with a visitor that gave a presentation about bats! She taught us about several different bat species, specifically how bats are actually quite helpful for us. They’re useful for things like pollination, seed dispersal, insect control and creating medications.

We learned a game that helps us understand what echolocation is like for bats. It was similar to Maro-Polo in that campers were blindfolded and had to find the “insects” around them.

Here’s a Yellow Pepper compared to a Flying Fox Bat!

Slip and Slide! What a great way to end the week! Everyone took their turns down the slip and slid and then made their way to the popsicles that awaited them at the bottom of the hill.

For our Closing Song, all Pepper Groups performed our rendition of Tollgate is for You and Me. We had the help of one of our Stewards, Michael. We ended everything with the 4-H Pledge.

Additional Safety Tip: While we do our best to protect ourselves from bug bites and sunburns, some accidents inevitably happen. Be sure to check your camper for bug bites and even ticks every evening. Our proximity to these natural hazards puts us at risk for exposure.
