Hello everyone! We finally had a day without rain so we spent all day outside.
In the morning, we built fires. The two methods we used were matches and a magnifying glass. The magnifying glass uses the sun to help create a fire with a concentrated beam. This method takes a lot of patience to keep the beam of sun in one place for so long.
We had such great weather for canoeing today. No one fell in today so it was a success. A huge thank you to Heavner Canoe for bringing canoes and kayaks!
We made a foraging salad with lettuce and the other foraged leaves they found. For our dressing, we used strawberries with balsamic vinegar and mashed them together.
Each group went on “quests” to find little boxes of stickers. They each had cards which gave them directions then they used the compasses to direct them each way.
Using tarps and rope, they made shelters. Some of the groups got very creative by including “fireplaces” and buckets to collect the runoff water from the tarp.
We had Inquiry Fish this week, which is a program through 4-H which lets them explore engineering type activities by building a device to feed fish. They only had limited materials, so it took a lot of communication and cooperation. This is a program that is only in eight states currently and allows for kids to build critical thinking skills.
We had a session on American Sign Language today and learned the alphabet and some basic signs. A huge thank you to Sandria Graham, a nutrition educator in Wayne County, for teaching us the session!
I hope you’re all excited for archery tomorrow!
