Time Travelers Camp: Tuesday

Welcome back to Day 2 of Time Travelers Camp! Today, we made progress on our Native American style shelters, worked on our Time Machines to help transport us to the past, built scarecrows in the garden, and so much more. Take a look at a few parts of our day, below!

This morning in Garden Kitchen we mixed that batter for Drop Cornbread Biscuits. When we came back in the afternoon, they had been baked and were served with a side of honey!

Drop Cornbread Biscuits (Gluten Free!)

  • 1 stick cold, unsalted butter (1/2 cup)
  • 1¼ cups all-purpose gluten free flour
  • 1 cup fine yellow cornmeal
  • ½ tsp baking soda,  2 tsp baking powder,  1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • 2 eggs
  • ¾ cup unsweetened almond milk, 2 tbs honey

Directions: Preheat oven to 375 °F and grease cookie sheet. Cube the butter, place into a dish and set in fridge. In large bowl, mix dry ingredients until well combined. In medium bowl, whisk the eggs and then add milk and honey. Add cubed butter to dry ingredients. Use a pastry cutter to cut the butter into the flour. Gently fold the wet ingredients into dry and mix until combined. Use two large tablespoons to scoop and transfer dough onto cookie sheet to create mounds. Space each biscuit about 1 in apart. Use the back of your spoon to push the biscuit down slightly. Bake for 15 to 20 min, or until the biscuits have browned and are dry to the touch.

Many of the critters that live around the farm and in the woods would love to feast on our gardens. The Pepper Groups helped to fix this issue by building scarecrows for the Edu-Garden. In this activity, campers worked together to stuff some old clothing with straw and decorated a pillow case to make a face for the scarecrow. The Green Peppers thought about monster faces that would be scary to them and created these images on their pillowcase-face.

Green Peppers tried to show their scariest faces to help keep crows away from the crops!

Goats and chickens are getting lots of love this week! Taking part in Animal Chores really helps our campers learn to be responsible and care for others, as well as teaches them new life skills.

The Orange Pepper Engineers were hard at work on their Time Machine STEAM project. As we learn about life in the past, our campers imagine ways to build a machine to visit the past and the future. They were thinking practically as they decided to add a first aid attachment to the side of their machine. Great job representing the Safety in C.A.R.E.S!

Campers met with Miss Ellen in the Activity Center to try out Candle Dipping. They started by brainstorming the uses of candles and where/when they would have been needed the most. Campers noticed that we have lights in the AC but before lightbulbs were invented, people probably used candles. Campers practiced patience and persistence as they completed the candle dipping process. Carefully, they alternated between dipping their wick in the wax and cool water until their candle had reached a thickness of their liking.

REMINDER: Join us at 3:30pm on Friday afternoon for a few songs and skits that the campers have prepared! *We will still have After-Care for those that are registered.*
