Water Camp: Day 4

We have had a blast during Day 4 of Water Camp! Hopefully your camper is enjoying themselves as much as we’re enjoying having them here on the farm!

The Yellow Peppers went fishing this morning because they experienced some technical difficulties earlier in the week that cut into their fishing time. There were quite a few hungry fish!P1050307 P1050309 P1050311 P1050315

We made cornbread muffins with Ms. Pam and ate them with butter that we made yesterday and some honey. We also ground some corn into meal, but it wasn’t ground finely enough to use for our muffins.

We did a few experiments using simple materials and water. We tested water tension by filling a cup to the brim and seeing how many pennies we could add to the cup before it overflowed. We also set a plastic bag in the sun and observed water condensing on the inside of the bag. We practiced transferring colored water from one container to another using only a paper towel. Ask your camper what they learned about water properties!

P1050352

Green Peppers place as many pennies as they can in a cup full of water to test the water tension.

Orange Peppers perform some water experiments.

The Orange and Red Peppers used their creative brains to collectively make a birdbath out of clay. The Red Peppers shaped theirs like a flower, and each camper made a different petal of the flower. The Orange Peppers made theirs leaf-shaped to complement the flower. They turned out wonderfully!

We will be canoeing on the farm pond tomorrow, so we spent some time practicing our canoe strokes and communication. Each canoe will have two campers and one Steward operating it. Look for canoeing photos in tomorrow’s blog post!

Orange Peppers learn about canoe safety.

P1050337

Green Peppers practice paddling.

P1050331

We created edible cucumber boats with some feta sauce in Garden Kitchen this afternoon. We also sampled applesauce that the Red Peppers made and some quinoa.

Orange Peppers clean out the seeds from their cucumber boats.

P1050375

So excited for cucumber boats!

We went for a hike around the farm and talked about runoff on the farm. Ask your camper what they learned about runoff in the water cycle!

Red Peppers found some frogs and toads on their hike through the forest.

We continued to craft our own boats as part of our STEM project. Hopefully the campers did a good job designing their watercraft because the final tests are tomorrow!

Yellow Peppers work diligently on their boats.

Please make sure your camper brings a bathing suit and towel tomorrow for our water slide at the end of the day. We wouldn’t want them to miss out on the final activity of the week! If you have not returned your evaluation, we ask that your bring it back at either drop-off or pick-up tomorrow. Thank you!
