Bats, Bees, and Butterflies 2013: Week 1, Day 3

Hi Peppers!

It was a chilly day at camp but it warmed up quick!

Today was Bee Day and we had a beekeeper come in to teach us all about bees! He showed us honeycomb, honey, and different types of beekeeping hives.

During morning chores we collected eggs and got to milk a goat. We always have lots of fun with the animals!

We built our bat houses that we painted yesterday. Everyone got a turn to help put a nail in to make our bat house come together!

In morning garden kitchen we made tea and sunbutter with crackers. We learned how we can use natural sweeteners like honey and stevia leaves to make our tea sweeter.

We went on a hike in the afternoon, where we talked about colors and how moths camouflage themselves so bats don’t eat them.

We made candles using honeycomb wax and tried some honey while we read a bee story. It was about the queen bee and how she starts the colony.

We even talked about wasps! Everyone got to help make wasp’s nests and look at bees and a dragonfly under a microscope.

In our afternoon garden kitchen, we pretended that the world had no bees to pollinate fruits or vegetables. Ms. Katie taught us that onions and potatoes are just a few things that don’t need bees to pollinate them.

I had a great day learning about bees with you but I’m even more excited to learn about butterflies. I can’t wait to see you all tomorrow!
